Taut

CONCEPT STATEMENT:
Taut is a lamp designed to be played with and changed. Its two-part design features a flexible flat sheet that can be inserted into a pronged base in different ways to create a variety of lamp shade forms and lighting effects. The shade is held in place through tension, making it easy to customize. Taut encourages users to bring curiosity and creativity to the design and experiment with new forms. Here, function meets play. Taut is pragmatic, portable and intuitive enough to fit a wide range of contexts. Both the shade and base come in multiple materials and colors that users may combine to create distinct types of illumination, whether in a commercial, residential or outdoor setting.
PROJECT SPECS:
Shade: (D)10.5 in Base:(D)1.5x(H)6 in The lamp shade is made from mylar, which has been printed on in different colors. In production, the base model would be made from clear anodized aluminum. As pictured, other materials like maple wood and colored plastic could be explored to allow for further customization. Potential production methods include laser cutting aluminum tubing, wrapping veneer, and injection molding recycled HDPE. The LED light source is battery powered and rechargeable.
BIO: Lieyah Dagan is an industrial designer with a background in toy and gift products. She aims to bring a lighthearted spirit to her designs, crafting open-ended objects in malleable formats that invite users to experiment. Her goal is to give people the ability and freedom to personalize the objects they own, as she believes that adaptability is not just functional, but a source of joy and play.
