Material Objects: PS/PND (tie)
by Rachel McGovern
CONCEPT STATEMENT:
Through my early stages of material explorations for this collection, Material Objects, i noticed a challenge with our ability to define the boundaries between material and object. Throughout this process, came the celebration of materials that are also objects and objects that are also materials.
This collection lies at the intersection which allows them to be both. Materials Objects support and build our everyday spaces yet seldom get airtime. This collection reveals and appreciates their importance through new function and desire. Material Objects are often casted as cold, hard, unapproachable, with set function. These were the attributes i looked for in my material exploration.
PS/PND pendant showcases the common yet structurally supportive perforated sheet in collaboration with electrical braided sleeving. Used for general wire management, bundling and identification. The braided sleeving is now used to deform a single LED strip to create a dynamic weaving of light, color and pattern.
PROJECT SPECS:
24" w x 4.25" OD , 4' electrical hanging wire
BIO: Exploring interactions of form, I am building an archive of work that plays amongst ideas of minimalism, tactility and ornamentation. The objects I make become interactive sculptures for everyday use through the consideration of material and design. The performances between human and object and between object and human are key to the construction of my work. Viewers become collaborators, as their visual reaction and use of each object is the ultimate product of my work.
