Entracte
by Mathilde Piel
CONCEPT STATEMENT:
The word Entracte means ‘between acts’. This interlude occurred in the middle of a theater piece and was originally used to replace the candles to ensure decent lighting during the whole performance. The length of an act was determined by the time it took for the candles to melt, the height of the flame regarding the candle stick indicated the time that remained. The Entracte lamp is inspired by this experience and aims to use light as a means of embodying and visualizing time. A light bulb can be slid along a rod to set it at the desired height corresponding to a duration between 3 hours and 10 minutes. As time passes, the bulb will move down to the handle. Entracte is designed to accompany you in your daily activities, encouraging you to be aware of the present moment and the time passing around you.
PROJECT SPECS:
Height 35cm, radius 9cm Handle and rod: Turned walnut, hollowed with CNC. Light bulb: Opalescent polyurethane resin, containing LEDs. Internal mechanism: The system is the same as a kitchen timer that is manually wound up, slightly modified to make it silent. It is composed by a spring and gears made by injection-moulded ABS. A groove in the rod connects this mechanism to the light bulb, allowing the vertical movement of bulb along the rod.
