Periscope

by Mathieu Leclerc / Studio Knowhow

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

The Periscope lamp is a take on the proverb « One man’s trash is another man’s treasure ». Stemming from a lucky encounter with a beaten up 1970s’ Amisco stool left as rubbish on the sidewalk, the Periscope lamp is the first of a series of lighting explorations aiming to repurpose its metal frame. In kinship with the idea of ready-made components as catalysts of design opportunities, this lamp integrates pre-existing material into a luminous object in which the stool’s formal and sculptural qualities are deeply felt. Produced by the thousands from the 1970s’ to the late 1990s’, the once beloved Amisco stool seems to have fallen out of fashion for now; it is flooding the second-hand furniture market, often remaining unsold for months. It now holds the potential for a second life in the production of new designs, which could ultimately spare valuable material from the landfill.

PROJECT SPECS:

The general dimensions of the Periscope floor lamp are 63’’ (H) x 14’’ (W) x 8-1/2’’ (D). All of the structural components of the prototype were salvaged and are made of matte powder coated steel. The body of the lamp is composed of two lighting masts and a main shaft in which converge all of the wires connecting to the main cable. The prototype integrates four E12 sockets mounted with G16.5 frosted LED bulbs.
