Bolla

by Designers: HagenHinderdael (Lisa Hinderdael, Sofia Hagen), Manufacturer: Cemento

Category: manufactured

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Design has the responsibility to educate and inform - providing clever solutions to real world challenges. BOLLA brings awareness to how the escalated use of packaging materials is affecting our environment. Pointing the way to a circular economy instead of designing things to fail, bubble wrap sourced from packaging waste is used as formwork and transformed through parametric modelling and innovative research into the light product BOLLA. Made of an eco-friendly concrete mixture that has been custom-developed with material scientists, recycled plastic particles are combined into a concrete aggregate and poured into an organic-shaped mould. The textured concrete has a pattern of perforations which disperses light across BOLLA for a striking, effervescent glow. BOLLA comes as a floor standing light, with the possibility to be transformed into a pendant or bespoke feature installation.

PROJECT SPECS:

BOLLA consists of an eco-friendly concrete mixture using recycled plastic particles as an aggregate, poured into an organic mould lined with bubble wrap sourced from packaging waste. The standard finish comes in light grey concrete, with a variety of colours available upon request. The light source itself fulfils the sustainable narrative, using wafer-thin, circular OLED panels at 3000K. BOLLA comes as a floor standing light at 700mm height x 160mm diameter.

Hotai

by Sten Studio

Category: PROFESSIONAL

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Hotai refers to the Japanese study for the principles of Zen design:Fukinsei (asimetry), kanso (simplicity), shizen (naturalness), yugen (deepness) and seijaku (stillness), which were applied in the conception on this lamp. Culture and nature in Japanese design have a complementary relationship, to the point of a homology. Precisely, Hotai, means “complement”, and proposes a composition of three natural elements: wood, quartz and light that create a perfect synergy that evidences the law of gravity and the refraction of light theories. Its structure is held by a wood semicircle that from its characteristics it could not stand still, it is the weight of the crystal quartz sphere that stabilizes the structure in vertical position, being complemented by the light which is absorbed and refracted by the quartz having as a consequence all its inclusions exposed.

PROJECT SPECS:

Hotai is made of maple wood, clear quartz, brass and LED. There are two sizes: 18.1 x 7.8 x 12.2 in and 14.2 x 6.3 x 11 in. A traditional technique called yakisugi is applied on the structure, which consists in burning the wood to make it more resistant highlighting its natural veins. Hotai has two independent lamps with three intensities of the beam making it convenient to adapt it to any room environment.

Paraply

by Krista Lebovitz, Karina Encarnación

Category: student

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

During a time when uncertainty is inevitable and the lives we were once accustomed to seem distant, we return to the simple geometry of household lamps as the inspiration for PARAPLY. PARAPLY’s geometric shapes are a nod to comfort and stability. By rotating the dome either clockwise or counterclockwise atop the fixed base, the paper shade of PARAPLY can be opened and closed like an umbrella. The range of shade positions provides an infinite number of ways to illuminate a space. When the shade is cylindrical, the light is concentrated at the base (for reading at night), and the wider it opens —either upward or downward—the more diffused and broad the light becomes (for ambient lighting). PARAPLY attempts to capture the zeitgeist of today with its flamboyant colors and sustainable materials while acknowledging the fervent necessity for design to be well- crafted, accessible, and flexible.

PROJECT SPECS:

PARAPLY is comprised of a recycled paper shade (length = 14 cm), a translucent hollow hand-blown glass dome (radius = 7.5 cm), an opaque weighted base (thickness = 3 cm), a central glass tube (width = 2 cm) which houses the electrical wiring, an LED bulb, and a screw-and-gear system attached to a circular frame which holds and adjusts the shade’s position as the dome is rotated. PARAPLY comes in three colorways and is battery-operated.
