Hortus (tie)

by Ka Wai (Terry) Yuen

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

'Hortus,' derived from the Latin word for 'garden,' is more than just a lampshade; it becomes an intimate space for shared activities. Recent research highlights a trend of couples establishing homes and families together. However, after 3 years, intimacy in the relationship may gradually decline.

This innovative DIY design set offers fresh opportunities for users to nurture, engage, and revive their intimacy. The lampshade's wooden structure, free of glue, allows users to weave rattan-shaped fabric onto the frame, creating personalized lampshades. The kit includes flower and birdshaped magnets and cards, enabling users to infuse sentiments and memories, and fostering shared experiences with their partners.

As users continually infuse memories and emotions into the lampshade, it transcends its role as mere illumination; 'Hortus' evolves into a 'Home Garden,' cultivating and preserving the intimate bond between two family members.

PROJECT SPECS:

Plywood with Birch veneer, Clothes' Interfacing fabric, Paper and MDF

Material Objects: PS/PND (tie)

by Rachel McGovern

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Through my early stages of material explorations for this collection, Material Objects, i noticed a challenge with our ability to define the boundaries between material and object. Throughout this process, came the celebration of materials that are also objects and objects that are also materials.

This collection lies at the intersection which allows them to be both. Materials Objects support and build our everyday spaces yet seldom get airtime. This collection reveals and appreciates their importance through new function and desire. Material Objects are often casted as cold, hard, unapproachable, with set function. These were the attributes i looked for in my material exploration.

PS/PND pendant showcases the common yet structurally supportive perforated sheet in collaboration with electrical braided sleeving. Used for general wire management, bundling and identification. The braided sleeving is now used to deform a single LED strip to create a dynamic weaving of light, color and pattern.

PROJECT SPECS:

24" w x 4.25" OD , 4' electrical hanging wire

BIO: Exploring interactions of form, I am building an archive of work that plays amongst ideas of minimalism, tactility and ornamentation. The objects I make become interactive sculptures for everyday use through the consideration of material and design. The performances between human and object and between object and human are key to the construction of my work. Viewers become collaborators, as their visual reaction and use of each object is the ultimate product of my work.

Mellow (tie)

by María del Mar González

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Mellow is a small portable outdoor lamp designed for a dinner with family or friends in a garden, park or beach. Since the light is emitted around but not upwards, it allows to illuminate the table and the environment without invading the visual field while having a relaxed conversation.

The change in light is regulated by the thickness of the lampshade: at the top it is opaque and at the bottom it is translucent, emitting a warm and mysterious light. With a minimalist and contemporary design, it is made up of a subtle revolution body that is slightly deformed. The volume and a light are discreet protagonists as the components are visually hidden and the material extends over the whole piece.

PROJECT SPECS:

Warm light: 3000K
Maximum power: 3W
Technology: LEDs
Activation: touch switch in the top depression
Charging: usb-c with silicone cover against dust and water
Battery: 3 Li ion 18650 battery pack

Lume (tie)

by Chris Jing

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Lume is a family of lamps to elevate the coffee-drinking experience. Lume gives people a relaxing mood, sitting quietly beside that cup of coffee. Lume Outdoor is used within coffee stores, and Lume Home is a premium collectible to bring the coffee experience home. They share the exact same lighting unit. The design challenges are incorporating LEDs into a small space and achieving convenient recharging purposes. I used COB LEDs and spring touch switch, being able to control the lamp by simply touching the outer shell. I also put magnets and induction charging coil in it so that Lume is rechargeable with magnetic induction chargers. Lume Outdoor is 3D printed for prototypes and PLA injection molded for commercial use, reducing the cost per lamp and protecting the environment since PLA is made from plants. Lume Home is made of frosted glass to diffuse the light even softer.

PROJECT SPECS:

Lume Unit is the lighting unit for both lamp designs, it is 77mm in height and 135mm in diameter. Lume Outdoor is designed for commercial space with 230mm in height and 135mm in diameter, using PLA injection molding for manufacturing. Lume Home is designed for home with 176mm in height and 135mm in diameter, using glass molding and sand blasting for manufacturing.

BIO: I am a happy undergraduate student at ArtCenter College of Design, majoring in product design. I want to contribute to the design industry with high standard aesthetic and practical products, so that when people see them, they will cast understanding smiles.

Starfall

by Haoda Ma

CONCEPT STATEMENT:

Seeing a sky full of stars should not be a privilege. Growing up in a heavily polluted city, seeing the starry night in Joshua Tree National Park was an unforgettable experience for the designer. Starfall outdoor pendant aims to recreate the awe-inspiring experience of seeing a sky full of stars for the users.

Starfall pendant works with wind to create memorable starry night effects. The inner perforated brass tube projects starry light effects onto the outer recycled polyethylene tube. The inner tube is fixed in place, while the outer tube hangs from the top of the light fixture and moves subtly and elegantly with the breeze. The subtle movement in the outer tube allows the star projection to flow, creating a magical and transforming starry night, while the downlight provides a steady light source for general usage.

PROJECT SPECS:

Starfall pendant is 16.5 inches in height and 6 inches in diameter. The outer shell is made from recycled polyethylene tube and the inner structure is made from perforated brass tube. To generate the starry light effect, Starfall pendant utilizes a tubular light bulb with LED filaments inside. While the pendant showcases the starry effect from the side, it also generates soft downlight through a diffuser toward the bottom of the brass tube.
